As the U.S. gears up for another political debate this week – this time it’s the Vice Presidential candidates battling it out – the ladies at Profiles have been thinking about the value of a televised debate this close to the election. Since we are communications pros, we watch the debates a little differently. We look at the non-verbal communication between each candidate, listen closely to the rhetorical sparring and review each candidate’s debate strategy. While we make a point not to discuss politics in the office, we can’t help but feel the excitement around the upcoming election.
Some questions to consider:
- Do political debates actually sway voters one way or another?
- Are debates watched primarily by the voters who have already made their minds up and are just “rooting on” their candidate?
- Who determines the “winner?”
This infographic from the Washington Post sheds light on how debates actually affect the election results.
